Diversity and Inclusion in the Board Room

Oct 1, 2024

In C-suites and boardrooms all over the globe, diversity and inclusion are rapidly evolving from slogans and promises to actualities.

These meetings may focus on the company, but it is important to remember that the decisions made here affect everyone, from employees to shareholders to the economy. These meetings are highly planned, and follow an established set of rules and procedures (such as Robert’s Rules of Order).

Boardrooms are designed to accommodate smaller groups of people. They typically seat 8 to 20 individuals around a large table, which allows face-to-face discussions and encourages unity. Furniture that is of high-quality, as well in technology, such as teleconferencing capability and advanced audiovisual systems can create the environment required for productive collaboration.

Using discussion boards is an effective way to engage students in discussions that extend beyond the classroom and help students see how their perspectives from outside are a part of the learning process in the classroom. Instructors may begin by asking icebreakers to help students become familiar with the responses of their peers. Speer at Wichita State, asks her students to create an emoji chain to express their personality and the things they enjoy. Students then read and respond to the answers of their peers. In a summary of a discussion, highlighting the main ideas and themes inspires students to keep track of the entire forum.
